Bride’s shocking reaction to wedding guest’s cash gift

Cathy Donohue

We can’t get over this.

A few weeks ago, people were absolutely outraged after a couple explained how they received a shocking response from the groom after giving a wedding gift costing €80.

Now, we have another wedding horror tale but this particular one involves a bride.

These experiences are often shared on internet forums and this particular one comes courtesy of Mumsnet.

One woman took to the sharing site to describe how she gave a financial donation of €100 and the reaction it was met with was just shocking.

She explains:

“I recently attended an ex-colleague’s wedding where, in response to a request for cash gifts, I sent what I thought was a pretty decent cheque (£100 if it matters, though I can’t help feeling it shouldn’t)”.

All grand until you hear the reaction from the bride which came in the form of an email a few days after the wedding.

“I received an email which opened with a few comments about how glad they were to see everybody and how generous they’d all been, then said “we were surprised that your contribution didn’t seem to match the warmth of your good wishes on our big day. In view of your own position, if you wanted to send any adjustment it would be thankfully received”.

She then goes on to explain what she thinks the bride meant when she referred to the wedding guest’s ‘position’.

“I’ll mention that “your own position” probably refers to a recent inheritance I’ve had, which maybe they expected something from (and this is an ex-colleague, remember, not a close friend or relative)”.

Shocking, as we’re sure you’ll agree.

Unsurprisingly, other Mumsnet users were quick to offer their support. One person described the behaviour as ‘bizarre’, another said ‘grabby and entitled’ while someone else ‘awful, awful people’.

The wedding guest later chipped in to say that she had replied to the email with just one sentence:

“”I assume this was some sort of mistake?”

We approve and the other users also said they loved her ‘stinger’ of a reply.

What do you think? Is this shocking or have you heard of similar behaviour? Let us know in the comments below.
