A mother of one has been jailed after being found guilty of driving while under the influence of alcohol.

The mother and hospital care assistant was found by Gardaí slumped over the wheel of her car with an open can of beer beside her.

Her one-year-old child, who is said to have been highly distressed, was in the backseat of the car during the crash.

Gardaí who arrived on the scene were stated as saying that when they found her she was ‘unable to speak’.

She was arrested and brought to Clondalkin Garda Station where she was found to be four times over the legal drinking limit. Neither mother or child was injured in the crash.

According to Independent.ie  Judge David McHugh, who was presiding over the case, said it was an “appalling breach of trust” and she “thoroughly deserved” the sentence.

He sentenced the accused to 28 days in jail after she pleaded guilty to being drunk while in charge of a child and being drunk while in charge of a vehicle. She was also fined €200 and banned from driving for three years.
