Irish celebs pledge to join Vicky Phelan and Charlie Bird on Croagh Patrick climb

A huge number of people have promised to join Vicky and Charlie on their climb.

On last week's Late Late Show, RTÉ journalist Charlie Bird spoke about his plan to conquer Croagh Patrick after he shared his experience with Motor Neurone Disease.

He subsequently met Irish cervical cancer campaigner Vicky Phelan, who he had "roped in" to climb the Mayo mountain with his family.

Vicky shared photos from their meeting on Twitter and wrote: "I have also been roped in to climb Croagh Patrick with Charlie and Claire, and the whole of Ireland it appears."

Since then, both Vicky and Charlie have been flooded with support, with many famous faces promising to join them on the trek.

Charlie shared that Daniel O'Donnell said he would climb the mountain with them.

He tweeted: "As I left the Late Late Show studio last Friday Daniel O'Donnell made an amazing gesture to me. One that I will keep forever.

"Later he said he will join me on my climb of Croagh Patrick if he is at home. Thanks Daniel! See you on the reek with the rest of the country!"

Ryan Tubridy is also among the Irish celebrities offering to join the pair.

During his radio show this week, the Late Late Show host said: "If she's going up the hill, I'll go up the hill with them."

While on the Late Late, Charlie called on politicians to grant terminally ill people the right to die via medical assistance on their own terms.

He said: “Whatever I decide in the future, I believe all of us, if we see somebody who is in a dark place, we should put out arms around them and don’t hide from it."

He later shared that he was blown away by the support he received after his appearance on the talk show.

Charlie said on Twitter: "Yes, I cried this morning but they were tears of joy at the overwhelming support I received for my Late Late Show appearance.

"If I am still mobile in the Spring, I will climb Croagh Patrick to highlight MND and other terminal illnesses. You’re all invited to join me. I love you all."
