It's more than a bit messy.

For obvious reasons, really.

Children are being urged not to throw eggs at cars this Halloween.

The prank traditionally associated with the spooky holiday has been denounced the Road Safety Authority (RSA) who have said that doing so can cause accidents on the roads.

Drivers have also been warned to be extra careful when driving due to the trend.

RSA’s Noel Gibbons said that more eggs tend to be thrown in the lead up to Halloween.

The culprits usually target cars or houses “under the guise of ‘trick or treat.'”

“No-one wants the elderly or vulnerable pelted with eggs or having flour poured on their doorstep, unplanned visitors, fireworks and bonfires can cause fear and anxiety for the elderly.”

Gibbons also said that young people have taken to dressing up purely with the intent to “intimidate and scare people.”

“At this time of year lots of people like to dress up for Halloween but over the past few weeks we have seen news reports from across the world where people are dressing up as ‘killer clowns’ to intimidate and scare people, causing distress to people within our communities, particularly the young and the elderly is completely unacceptable.”

Gardaí have urged people not to throw eggs or flour.

Every year around this time, they receive far more complaints about the practice.
