Classic Chick-Flick Beaches Has Been Remade And We’ve Got A Peek!

Alison Bough

Prepare yourselves because American cable and satellite television channel Lifetime have just released the official trailer for their remake of 80’s weepy Beaches.

Grammy Award winner Idina Menzel, who voiced Frozen‘s Elsa and the song that just won’t Let It Go, plays CC Bloom, the role made famous in 1988 by Bette Midler. Coincidentally, Wind Beneath My Wings was the song that Menzel sang in duet with Kristen Bell when they were auditioning for their Frozen roles.

Nia Long, star of The Best Man Holiday, co-stars as Hillary Whitney, a role originally played by actress Barbara Hershey. The remake (which the HerFamily team think is highly controversial) of the classic chick-flick will be premiering Stateside on Saturday, January 21. Directed by Emmy Award nominee, Allison Anders, it features new takes on the classic songs ‘Wind Beneath My Wings‘ and ‘The Glory of Love‘ as well as several other songs recorded specifically for the movie.

In this contemporary made-for-tv version, Beaches follows the serendipitous meeting of two young girls on the Venice Boardwalk, who, though worlds apart in lifestyle, embark on unexpected and lifelong friendship. CC (Menzel) is an aspiring singer trying to make it in Los Angeles until she is discovered by a director who gives her her first big shot. Hillary (Long) is the daughter of a prominent civil rights lawyer who struggles to find her own destiny. Their friendship – even with its ups and downs – sustains them for decades.

The tear-jerker is based on the novel by Iris Rainer Dart and A+E Networks have said that they also plan to distribute the movie internationally.

Hmm. The HerFamily Team remain sceptically on the fence about this one.

Should they have re-made this classic or left well enough alone? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
