Sequel to Colm Tóibín’s Brooklyn will be published in 2024

Acclaimed Irish author Colm Tóibín has written a sequel to his award-winning 2009 novel Brooklyn, which was famously adapted into a hit movie starring Saoirse Ronan. Both the original book and its film focus on young Irish woman Eilis Lacey who emigrates to Brooklyn in the early 1950s for work. However, after settling there, she finds herself drawn back to her hometown of Enniscorthy and must choose between her life in the US and Ireland. The book won the 2009 Costa Novel Award and the subsequent movie adaptation in 2015 wound up being nominated for three Oscars including Best Actress for Ronan. The plot synopsis published by The Bookseller reads:

"It is the 1970s and Lacey is living with her husband Tony Fiorello and their children in Long Island. But a shocking piece of news at the opening of the novel propels Eilis back to Ireland, to a world she thought she had long left behind and to ways of living, and loving, she thought she had lost."

Long Island will be published by Picador in Ireland in May 2024. Picador's publisher Mary Mount said of the book:
