Corrie boss reveals heartbreaking details about Aidan Connor’s storyline

It was a moment that fans may have missed.

Coronation Street showrunner Kate Oates has said Aidan Connor nearly took his own life earlier this year. It emerged late last night that Carla Connor's half-brother will tragically take his own life in scenes set to air next week, leaving fans devastated. And now Kate has said that there were hints of Aidan's storyline as early as January this year. In late January, Aidan ended up mailing off a letter to his dad - only to intercept the postman when it was out for delivery, after having a change of heart when he found out Carla needed a transplant. "There was a moment where Carla told Aidan and her family she needed a kidney transplant. "The next day Aidan went and intercepted a letter at his dad's house. He was planning on doing it that night. "But he decided to hang on for Carla. He decided to hang on for her. "We see moments of hope after that and then moments when it goes back down. But there was a letter. And it may be found in subsequent episodes."

It comes as Coronation Street confirmed that Aidan will tragically take his own life, as former X Factor winner Shayne Ward is set to exit the soap. Aidan will make his final appearance on screen next Monday, May 7, however, his death will not be shown on screen. Shayne said:

"I am honoured to have been trusted with a storyline like this, it shows the confidence that Kate and the team had in me to be able to play it. “When you get given a storyline like this it is a decision that is not taken lightly, I have played it with as much honesty and truth as I could. “I am very proud of what I have done in my three years on the show and on this storyline in particular."
