And the dramatic storyline will eventually result in the departure of Liz McDonald, after Beverly Callard announced she was leaving the soap last year.
“Liz attempts to do something heroic for her son to save him from the nightmare he finds himself in. That ends up going slightly wrong and ends up corrupting their relationship,” he continued. “Ultimately it will determine the best place for Liz is not in Weatherfield as she and Steve are upsetting each other."
And in good news for fans who may be hoping to see Liz on the cobbles again at some point in the future, Macleod promised Callard "is going out with a bang", adding: "we are certainly not killing Liz off.”
Coronation Street is set to celebrate a number of massive milestones this year: their 10,000th episode is set to air near the start of the year, and the 60th anniversary in December.
And while MacLeod said there wasn't much he could share - for "reasons of secrecy" - he did hint at what fans could expect from the momentous moments.
"We have some novel, fairly left-field ideas with elements of genre-bending that we are currently exploring. It’s exciting," he continued. “At the start of the year we have our 10,000th episode which we are also intending to mark in a way that is Corrie to the core, with a laconic, comedic and character-driven vibe.”
