Couple jailed for manslaughter after bouncy castle with girl inside blows away

Jade Hayden

A couple have been jailed for three years after a bouncy castle under their watch blew away with a young girl inside.

The child, seven-year-old Summer Grant, was killed when the inflatable was carried across a park in Essex, England in 2016.

BBC reports that fairgrounds workers William Thurston and his wife Shelby Thurston had not tethered the bouncy castle to the ground properly.

The pair were sentenced to three years in prison for manslaughter.

The court heard that Grant had been inside the bouncy castle when it was carried away by the wind and began “cartwheeling” through the park.

The seven-year-old died from “multiple traumatic injuries to the head, neck, and chest.”

On the day of the incident, a yellow weather warning had been issued by the UK Met Office.

Storm Katie was due to arrive two days later.
