A significant update this evening.

All mass gatherings could be banned in Ireland until at least August, it has been reported.

According to The Irish Times, all gatherings of more than 5,000 people are set to be prohibited until late August or early September in a bid to curb the spread of coronavirus.

This includes major sports fixtures, some concerts and other events due to take place over the summer, which will have to be postponed or cancelled.

It is understood that the decision was discussed by Ministers at a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday (April 21) morning.

Mass gatherings were first banned at the beginning of March when Taoiseach Leo Varadkar imposed restrictions on indoor gatherings of more than 100 people and outdoor gatherings of more than 500 people.

Since then, the country has entered a state of lockdown which will be reviewed on May 5.
