Watch out for jellyfish if you’re going swimming this weekend.
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown council have warned bathers of the presence of a dangerous type of jellyfish that has been spotted in Sandycove and further into Dublin Bay.
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown issued a notice on Thursday detailing that warning signs had been erected in lifeguard patrolled areas due to the sighting in recent days of Lions Mane jellyfish, the largest known species of jellyfish.
“Warning Signs have been erected in the Life Guard patrolled areas at Sandycove as Lions Mane jellyfish have been spotted here and further into the bay,” the notice read.
“As an added precaution, the lifeguard warning flags are on red and will remain there till further notice. The Life Guards are actively keeping a vigilant eye on the water and bathers.”
Lions Mane jellyfish are common in the Irish Sea and their sting, though capable of causing temporary pain, is not known to be fatal.
With the weather that’s been forecast for the coming days, it’s something to bear in mind if you’re going swimming over the weekend.
