Dublin Zoo just welcomed a baby elephant calf

Cathy Donohue

If you’re looking for something fun to do with the kids this weekend, we have just the ticket.

A new baby elephant has been born at Dublin Zoo and he needs a name.

This little guy, the sixth elephant calf to be born at the popular tourist attraction in less than three years, arrived on Monday afternoon.

Mother Yasmin and father Upali are now proud parents and the newborn will join the current herd of ten Asian elephants at the zoo’s Kaziranga Forest Trail.

Gerry Creighton, Operations Manager at Dublin Zoo said the arrival of the zoo’s eleventh elephant was a very special moment for all involved:

“It is with immense pride that we announce the birth of the latest addition to the Asian elephant herd here at Dublin Zoo.

“The birth of an Asian elephant is an amazing spectacle and this was no exception. The arrival of the calf was greeted with celebratory trumpeting and each member of the herd, from the oldest to youngest, played a role in assisting with the birth”.

The team at Dublin Zoo are eager to hear the public’s suggestions for the baby calf’s name and you, and your little ones, can submit ideas here.
