A Call the Midwife movie is officially in the works

Call the Midwife fans will be overjoyed to hear that a movie is in the works.

A film based on the beloved BBC drama series is in production.

Neal Street and BBC Film confirmed they’re working on a Call the Midwife movie.

The movie will reportedly be set overseas in 1972 and will feature characters from the TV series.

The Call the Midwife team shared:

“Neal Street, in development with BBC Film, is producing a Call the Midwife movie! This will be set overseas in 1972, and feature the characters you love from our existing TV drama!”

Executive Producer Dame Pippa Harris said they’re delighted by the audience’s response to the show.

“Emboldened by this warmth and enthusiasm, now feels like the right time to expand our world and take our nuns and midwives onto the big screen with our movie, and back in time with the prequel.”

Not only is a movie in development, but a spin-off series is also in production.

The spin-off series will land in 2026, and it will be set in Poplar during World War Two.

Writer and Executive Producer, Heidi Thomas also spoke out about the project.

“The Blitz years in the East End were extraordinary – the bombs fell, the babies kept on coming, and the Sisters kept on going.”

Heidi said there will be so much in the prequel for loyal fans, as well as new viewers.

The original Call the Midwife series will also continue. The cast is currently filming the 2025 Christmas special.
