"The last 24 hours has been bumpy"
Kate Garraway has shared a rare photo of her husband Derek on Christmas Day.
The presenter said their Christmas was off to a bumpy start because her husband had a health scare.
She explained that Derek almost had to go back to the hospital.
Her husband is still recovering from Covid-19. Derek was diagnosed with the virus in March 2020 and remained in a critical condition until March 2021.
He was discharged from the hospital in April, but Garraway said he needs round-the-clock care.
Speaking about their first Christmas at home since his diagnosis, Kate said, "The last 24 hours has been bumpy - a scare that meant Derek might have had to go back into hospital."
Luckily, a nurse was able to visit their home to resolve the problem.
Kate explained that Derek had one of his "ultra fatigue days" so he has been too weak to do much other than sleep.
Christmas Day wasn't as straightforward as Kate hoped.
"I burnt the parsnips ( Darceys favourite ) & got the “wrong” Lego for Billy," she shared.
"But now snuggled up around Dad’s bed watching Nativity. Everything feels suddenly perfect."
Garraway said she feels so grateful to have a chance to be together at Christmas.
Earlier this month, the presenter gave an update on Derek's recovery.
She told GMB, "He still has extraordinary problems with communication, mobility is very limited, massive problems with fatigue.”
She said they had no idea if he would survive last Christmas.
“And this year, of course, he’s home so we are spending Christmas together, and that is the biggest gift.
