Every day is Mother’s Day: Let’s hear it for Italian MEP Licia Ronzulli

"I want to show the difficulties faced by a woman who works and is also a mother,"

There are many things we admire about Italian MEP Licia Ronzulli. The influential 40-year-old New Forza Italia party representative is Vice Chair of the Delegation to the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly and a member of the Employment and Social Affairs committee. Before that she was a hospital director and nurse in Milan and Bangladesh.

But what we love most about Ronzulli, a long-time campaigner for gender equality, is her decision to bring her little girl with her to work whenever necessary, a decision that has people talking once again after this image went viral on Reddit this week:

Vittoria first hit the headlines alongside her hard working mum in September 2010, when Ronzulli, who was breastfeeding, carried her baby to a European Parliament vote in a sling. The press went wild, but Ronzulli insisted her decision was “not a political gesture but a maternal one”.

Since then, little Vittoria has made a number of appearances, delighting photographers and amusing everyone present with her outfits and antics.

We applaud Licia Ronzulli for her refreshing attitude, which demonstrates that being a parent is a full-time role that offers no time off: “I have been bringing her along because I want to show the difficulties faced by a woman who works and is also a mother,” she said.

We couldn’t agree more.
