4-year-old Fiadh O’Connor has sadly passed away.
The young girl’s parents announced the harrowing news this afternoon.
Fiadh’s parents Rory and Laura paid tribute to their little girl, who had terminal cancer, in a moving post on Facebook.
Her family recently appealed to the public to help them secure palliative care so Fiadh could die at home.
The Wexford family wrote:
“It is with the saddest of hearts we share that our beautiful, precious Fiadh passed away peacefully at home days before her 5th birthday, cared for by her loving family, after an illness so bravely borne on 5th April.
“She died in her Mammy’s arms, holding her Daddy’s hand surrounded by love, with Páidà and all of her favourite people close by.”
Her parents continued, “We will miss her forever but take comfort that she died at home, where she belongs and was looked after with love by her aunties.”
Her parents remembered Fiadh as an amazing, clever, kind, and treasured child.
“She captured everyone’s hearts. Fiadh was so brave throughout her illness and she approached every day with resilience and strength, more than we will ever know in our lifetime.”
Their little girl will be “forever loved and remembered” by her parents Rory and Laura, and her younger brother PáidÃ.
She “wore her bravery like a crown”.
Rory and Laura said they will forever be proud of their little girl.
“Heaven has gained an angel and a piece of our hearts forever,” they added.
The heartbroken parents also praised the medical teams who cared for Fiadh, including the oncology team at Crumlin Hospital.
“Particularly Dr Jane Pears & Nessa Mullin CNS, the staff of St. Gabriel’s Ward in Wexford.
They also thanked the team at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre in America.
They also extended their gratitude to Dr. Balding and her palliative care team at Harold’s Cross Hospice, Dublin.
They took “clinical responsibility and allowed Fiadh to die at home”.
