The countdown had just been belted out and all around the country people were hugging and kissing – meanwhile, mums across the world were in the throws of labour. In Ireland, it was Limerick Mum, Jennifer who was the first to give birth just after the clock struck midnight to welcome in 2016.
Little Kieran Gibbons was eager to make his entrance into the big, bad world and arrived safe and sound just eleven seconds after the countdown had finished.

The Irish Independent, baby Kieran arrived at University Hospital Limerick bang on time and most importantly, healthy, weighing 8lbs 3oz. He was due on the first of the first. Hopefully, he'll reach all his milestones as promptly!
Meanwhile, just 10 seconds later at The National Maternity Hospital,
KFM Radio reported baby Gabriella Duncova was born weighing 8lbs and 14 ounces, with baby and mum said to be doing well.
