First same-sex marriage took place in Ireland this morning

Following the legalisation of same-sex marriage in Ireland, the first couple tied the knot this morning. (We love a good wedding!)

Barrister Cormac Gollogly and banker Richard Dowling got married in a service in Clonmel, officiated by senior registrar Mary-Claire Heffernan.

The couple, who have been together for 12 years, had previously celebrated their civil partnership in the Maldives. Today’s ceremony was a more private affair.

Gollogly told the Irish Times: “We didn’t want to detract from the main ceremony and debated what to do… We decided to keep it simple and decided to have lunch with the families in Dublin.”

As of Monday, same-sex couples can give full notice of their intention to marry.
