Footage Emerges of Verbally Abusive Teacher in New York School

School is supposed to be somewhere where your kids feel safe, where they can excel and where they are encouraged. You expect this from any educational establishment.

But this week The New York Times published footage as part of an exposé. It involved a teacher, Charlotte Dial, who works at a Success Academy charter school in New York.

In the video, recorded by an assistant teacher in 2014 who was concerned about the treatment of children, Dial can be seen berating one of the pupils in a first-grade class.

The assistant teacher, who wanted to remain anonymous, shared the clip with The New York Times after she left the establishment in November.

The school apparently has strict guidelines for teacher behaviour which include refraining from yelling at students, using sarcastic tones, or giving “consequences intended to shame children.”

After being shown the footage, Dial was suspended pending an investigation. However a week and a half later she returned to the classroom.

Apparently, this type of incident has happened at these schools before. One former employee told the publication that she once witnessed a principal mocking a girls test score to another staff member.

The investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
