Footballer Sacked For Sending Vile Tweet Mocking Stillborn Baby

Katie Mythen-Lynch

Well this is disgusting indeed.

A semi-professional footballer in the UK has been axed from the team after he tweeted another player, referencing his stillborn daughter.

Alfie Barker (19), who is currently on loan at Codicote from Hitchin Town, is being investigated by the Football Association over the messages, sent to Bournemouth midfielder Harry Arter (27) after their draw with Arsenal on Tuesday night.

One of the messages read: “at least you didn’t lose your kid.”

In another tweet, Barker said: “big hype just for a disappointment like the 9 months leading up to your childs birth.”

Arter’s baby daughter Renee died at birth in December 2015. In October, he and his wife Carly shared the happy news that they are expecting again.

A statement issued by Hitchin Town Football Club confirmed Barker, who initially claimed his Twitter account had been hacked before later apologising, was no longer on the team:

“The club adopts a responsible approach to social media and would expect any player connected to Hitchin Town to do likewise.” it read.

“In the light of the player’s irresponsible and anti-social behaviour, we are terminating Alfie Barker’s registration and relationship with the club with immediate effect.”

In a statement, Codicote FC said: “We are disgusted and appalled at comments made by our loan player. We will work with the FA and other authorities on an appropriate solution.”
