Former minister investigated over child abuse claims

Katie Mythen-Lynch

A former government minister is being investigated after allegations of child sex abuse were made against him.

Gardaí have confirmed that a probe is in the early stage after a number of alleged victims, both male and female, came forward over the last six months to report incidents they claim happened 30 years ago, when they were children.

The investigation into the man, a respected politician in the 1990s, is being handled by the specialist Garda National Protection Services Unit (GNPSB).

According to a report in the Irish Independent, one of the alleged victims claims to have reported the man in question to the Gardaí a decade ago, but the initial allegation was never progressed. No complaint about the lack of an investigation was ever received by the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission.
