Fota needs YOUR help to name this rather unusual baby

Katie Mythen-Lynch

A new baby tapir has arrived at Fota Wildlife Park and staff are looking for your suggestions as to what they should name him.

Fota celebrate first Tapir Calf in 9 years tobe born in Park

The Brazilian tapir, the first to be born at Fota since 2006, is the first calf of parents Maya, who came from Lodz in Poland and Basil, from Curragh Wildlife Park in the Isle of Man.

A relative of the rhinoceros, the Brazilian Tapir, which hails from South America, can weigh up to 250kg and grow up to two metres in length. The name Tapir comes from the Brazilian word for ‘thick’, which is a reference to its tough skin, while its long, flexible snout helps collect food.

The public can suggest a name via the park’s website and the winning suggestion will win a Wild Experience at Fota.
