Good news: Pay increases are back in fashion

Katie Mythen-Lynch

The term ‘pay rise’ may have been reduced to dirty word status over the last seven years, but the good news is it’s making a triumphant return to popularity, with the majority of Irish companies planning on offering raises next year.

According to the latest survey by employers group IBEC, seven out of ten companies plan on rewarding their employees’ hard work with increases of an average two per cent in 2016.

However, the IBEC poll shows that smaller firms are still struggling to survive the effects of the recession and the increase in the National Minimum Wage to €9.15; only 58 per cent of companies with less than 50 employees will offer increases next year.
