Queen Elizabeth has issued a statement on the coronavirus outbreak.
The Queen said as the UK enters a “period of great concern and uncertainty,” she is sure that the British public will be able to adhere to the daily changes that are asked of them.
The number of live coronavirus cases in the UK currently stands at 2,692. 137 people have died.
“We are all being advised to change our normal routines and regular patterns of life for the greater good of the communities we live in and, in particular, to protect the most vulnerable within them,” said the Queen.
“At times such as these, I am reminded that our nation’s history has been forged by people and communities coming together to work as one, concentrating our combined efforts with a focus on the common goal.”
The Queen paid tribute to the medical staff, scientists, and emergency service workers who have been doing their utmost to quell the spread of the virus for the past few weeks.
She said that as the UK finds new ways to stay in touch with loved ones, she believes that her nation is “up to that challenge.”
“You can be assured that my family and I stand ready to play our part,” she said.
It was announced earlier today that schools, colleges, and childcare facilities across the UK will shut from tomorrow.
This comes just over one week since Ireland closed its schools and colleges, and days since the government asked all pubs and bars to shut.
The closures will last until at least March 29, but are expected to extend much longer.
