Groom calls his fiancée a ‘toddler throwing a tantrum over a sparkly toy’ for not wanting to buy a €90 wedding dress

A groom has been branded "controlling" for calling his fiancée a "toddler" for not wanting to buy a €90 wedding dress. It all began on Reddit's Am I The Asshole? forum, when the groom branded his fiancée's €850 wedding dress (plus the €108 for the veil) "too extravagant." He explained that they were planning on getting married in July this year, with the venue booked and most of the wedding "pretty much sorted." All that was left to get was the bridesmaid dresses and her wedding dress. The groom recalled how they had each put aside €9,000 for the wedding and, at the time of writing his post, they had €5,400 left over. He had imagined this going toward topping up their honeymoon fund. "We aren't the extravagant type at all," he explained. "Then comes the time for Emma to pick her dress. I know everything is more expensive when it has the term wedding attached to it. What I wasn't expecting was an $950 (around €850) dress plus $120 (around €108) veil!" He explained that he was using his father's old tux for his wedding, but had just gotten it taken in a little. His fiancée said that she couldn't use her mum's dress, as both she and her mum said that the style hasn't aged well. And while he acknowledged that was "fair", he went on to google dresses online in an effort to see what else was out there. "There were so many - and so many just like the one Emma wants for like, $50 (around €45) to $100 (€90)," he added. "I'm not trying to get her to cheap out on her dress but she will literally wear it once, one dress for over $1000 is just insane. That would fund our honeymoon." He went on to say that he had tried to show her some dresses he had found on Wish and other websites, but Emma was having none of it.

"It turned nasty unfortunately because I said I refuse to drop such a large amount of money on a dress and she argued that she is using her own money for the dress," the man continued. "Which isn't strictly true as we are about to marry and our finances will be joined."

Then, her parents got involved and offered to pay for the dress. However, he claimed that it's not a case of being able to afford the gown - it's just that there are what he claimed to be identical ones available at a fraction of the cost.

"I thought she would be ecstatic to learn there are identical dresses for a fraction of the cost but she was really angry and upset," he wrote, adding that she had been "extremely cold" towards him since their argument.

"Then yesterday she said if I want her to cheap out on her wedding dress on her wedding day that she needs to really consider if we are a good match for marriage," he continued, adding he was "blown away" that she would say that.

"I told her she's like a toddler throwing a tantrum over a sparkly toy she can't have. That was a mistake as she left to stay with her parents, who called to tell me I am much more than an asshole."

Many other Reddit users sided with Emma, pointing out to the groom that her dress was actually a pretty good price for bridal wear. "If my fiancé called me a toddler for spending one grand of my own money on a reasonably-priced dress for our wedding," one person said. "I'd be seriously reconsidering the marriage. That's such childish behaviour." "I have two daughters, and when I imagine offering to buy them their dream wedding dress for that one special day and their fiancés not 'allowing' that? Ooo boy... talk about controlling. I’d be telling my daughter to run for the hills," someone else added. "Honestly. I was going into this thread expecting her to want a 10k dress like the ones you'd see on Say Yes to the Dress or something," a different person commented. The original poster then amended the post, apologising to Emma after she found the thread. "Emma found this thread, it was a mistake to post here and I'm sorry I posted our problems on Reddit," he said.
