Is this true for you?

It’s a question for the ages and one that divides a lot of people – how much should you spend on an engagement ring?

Traditionally, people have always said that someone planning to propose should spend two months’ salary on a ring.

That old chestnut has, of course, turned out to be more of a fabrication than a tradition – diamond company De Beers came up with the ‘rule’ during an ad campaign in the 1930s.

The idea has stuck around ever since and might still have an influence on Irish couples.

A by The Vow last year found out just how much Irish people think should be spent on a ring.

It found that the majority, 41 per cent, are pretty sensible and said you should spend what ever you can afford.

Twenty-one per cent, on the other hand said it should be one month of the buyer’s salary.

Meanwhile, 16 per cent said it should be three month’s wages, while 6 per cent thought that less than a full month’s wages was enough.

Interestingly, a small minority (2.7 per cent) of Irish people that a couple should split the cost.
