The idea has stuck around ever since and might still have an influence on Irish couples.
A by The Vow last year found out just how much Irish people think should be spent on a ring.
It found that the majority, 41 per cent, are pretty sensible and said you should spend what ever you can afford.
Twenty-one per cent, on the other hand said it should be one month of the buyer's salary.
Meanwhile, 16 per cent said it should be three month's wages, while 6 per cent thought that less than a full month's wages was enough.
Interestingly, a small minority (2.7 per cent) of Irish people that a couple should split the cost.Explore more on these topics:
