‘Hero’ Saves Toddler From Choking In A McDonalds Restaurant

Sharyn Hayden

The idea of our kids choking on anything fills us with dread.

I am constantly reminding my kids to sit down while they eat and ALWAYS cut grapes, banana and sausages into small, manageable pieces for our two-year-old daughter.

Then of course we have the Lego Challenge; realising that our four-year-old son needs Lego in his life because he loves creating and building with it, but being terrified that his younger sister just might put some into her mouth one day.

As parents, we just have to try to stay on top of it as much as possible.

One thing we have yet to do, and are dragging our heels on, is doing a paediatric first aid course but after reading this story, I’m going to book one in straight away.

Mum of two Kate Wallace Daly was in a McDonalds in Limerick with her sons when she saw an infant girl at a table next to them beginning to choke.

The child’s mother appeared to be in shock so quick-thinking Kate ran to her assistance as she had learned some basic first aid responses after she became a mum herself.

“I cupped my hand and started patting the girl’s back, in up and down movements. I’d learned what to do if it ever happened to my own children. I’d be paranoid about that kind of thing,” she said.

“I hit her over the back two or three times and a bit of meat was released from her throat.”

Kate has been described as a ‘hero’ for acting without delay and saving the child’s life.

If you would like to learn what to do in the event that your child is choking, you can watch a tutorial online such as this one below, or book into the many paediatric first aid courses that are available.
