Homeless families in Dublin to receive free public transport next month

Melissa Carton

Homeless families living in the capital will be given access to free transport from next month.

Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy recently announced that families living in emergency accommodation will be able to avail of free public transport from August.

Children living in emergency accommodation already have access to free transport to and from school but this new scheme aims to help families during the summer holidays.

Homeless families living in Dublin will be given free Leap cards for the month of August with plans to extend this free public transport initiative being considered for the 2020 budget.

The new scheme with Dublin Region Homeless Executive is in partnership with the National Transport Authority.

While the homeless crisis in Dublin and throughout the country still needs more long term solutions this free transport scheme is one step in the road to helping families forced to live in emergency accommodation.
