Internet “filth”: Pope Francis doles out more pearls of parenting wisdom

Sive O'Brien

Pope Francis is back imparting his knowledge to parents, but this time he’s speaking out about internet safety.

Talking to journalists while on board the Papal plane to Rome, he warned of the dangers of internet “filth”, and said that children shouldn’t be allowed to use computers in their bedrooms, reported The Express. “There is dirty content, pornography, semi-pornography,” he commented.

The Pope, who has a Twitter account with more than six million followers, criticised those who are “too attached to their computer” because, he said, it is “bad for the soul” and “makes you a slave to your computer”.

He said that many parents trying to have a family meal felt like children were “in another world” on their smartphones, and praised the parents who only let their children use computers in “a common place”.

While acknowledging that the online world was “part of the progress of mankind” and “a reality that we cannot ignore”, Pope Francis also commented that “when it takes away from communal and family life, social life, sport, art and we remain attached to our computers, this is a psychological illness”.

Earlier this year, Pope Francis enlightened us with his thoughts and opinions on a number of parenting-related topics, including breastfeeding, discipline and contraception. Where would we be without his pearls of parenting wisdom?
