Ireland has the lowest divorce rate in the EU

Despite fears about the legalisation of divorce in Ireland 20 years ago, we have the lowest divorce rate in the European Union.

It was on November 24th 1995 when 50.3% of the Irish public voted in favour of the legalisation of divorce in Ireland.

According to Eurostat, the EU’s statistical body, the rate sits at 0.6 per 1,000 inhabitants.

The Irish Post reports that just over 50,000 divorce orders have been granted in total since 1997.

Just to put that into context for you, over 114,000 divorces were granted in England and Wales in 2013 alone.

Guess we must be doing something right!
