Fans had hoped to see the couple at the event because Wills has controversially missed the big night for two years in a row. Now, however, the fact that his decision to attend this year alongside his wife has been called into question has become a major source of embarrassment for the organisation.
Denying the claims, a Bafta spokesperson told The Sun: “It is completely untrue that Bafta has suggested that our president attend on his own. We would be delighted to welcome Their Royal Highnesses any year they are able to attend.”
Bafta chief executive Amanda Berry is understood to be working to resolve any misunderstanding, while Kensington Palace has yet to comment on behalf of the Duke and Duchess.
