Bron Studios, the production company behind the hit Irish TV show Kin has declared bankruptcy, putting the future of the crime drama in major doubt.
The Canadian studio, which has also backed the likes of big-budget flicks Joker, Licorice Pizza, and Ghostbusters: Afterlife, announced the bad news through co-founder and CEO Aaron L. Gilbert.
“Having explored many options for many months BRON had no choice but to take this step in light of its financial circumstances,” Gilbert said in a statement.
“The last few years have been incredibly difficult for BRON, and things have only gotten more complicated over these past months.”
The company cited the COVID pandemic and both the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes as major roadblocks for their future, ultimately proving insurmountable.
Kin’s future is in doubt
Co-created by Peter McKenna and Ciaran Donnelly, KIN aired its first season in September 2021 and starred big-name talents such as Aiden Gillen, Charlie Cox, and Ciarán Hinds supported by a host of great performances from the likes of Clare Dunne, Yasmin Seky and Emmett Scanlan.
Season two premiered in March and became a fan favourite in its prime-time Sunday evening slot. Filming for season three of the show has already begun with RTÉ approving season four and planning to begin filming in September.
However, with the financial backing from Bron now gone, RTÉ may struggle to find another global production company willing to shell out for future seasons.
As Kin is an expensive production to make by Irish standards, the show’s future is now in big doubt.
