The makers of LEGO have announced that from now on they will start making bricks from sustainable and botanical elements. These will include elements of nature such as leaves and sugar cane.

By 2030, the company wants all its bricks to be made from sustainable matter, but in the meantime they will just make up 2 percent of newly creates products. The company has spent over €130million in research to find other ways to make their popular plastic products.

According to The Sun, their reason for doing it is in response to the plastic waste crisis, with nearly eight million tonnes being dumped in the ocean every year.

Speaking about the change Tim Brooks, vice president of environmental responsibility at the Lego Group, said:

“[It’s a] great first step in our ambitious commitment of making all LEGO bricks using sustainable materials”.

Children and parents will not notice any difference in the quality or appearance of the new elements, because plant-based polyethylene has the same properties as conventional polyethylene.
