Locals furious at plans to open sex shop near school

Katie Mythen-Lynch

A community is up in arms over a new sex shop due to open in the area… across the road from a school.

Locals are furious that the owners of Playblue, which sells sex toys, lingerie, condoms and raunchy gifts, are planning to open a store near St Patrick’s Boys National School in Drumcondra, Dublin.

Local councillor Noel Rock said he has spoken to at least 50 residents who object to the store and believe it’s location is inappropriate.

Co-owner of the Kilkenny-based store Robert Doyle believes the residents are overreacting. He told The Herald: “There’s nothing to see. Children won’t be allowed in, and we’re hardly hanging around on street corners with placards,”

Posting on the company Facebook page, the Playblue owners said: ‘Just to give people in Drumcondra an idea what our shop might look like. Here is an photo of our shop in Kilkenny.’

“I think you’ve got to give the kids a bit more cop, they’re not going to be bothered about this shop across the way – they’re hardly going to know what’s in behind it,”

No special permission is required to open a sex shop in Ireland. Would you object to one opening in your neighbourhood? Let us know by tweeting @HerFamilydotie using the hashtag #HerFamOpinion.
