"I've made some huge mistakes as a mum, but I've done some things right. I obviously don't have daughters so I can't compare how I would have raised them."She continued to say that her boys had "very different role models in their lives", from their Grandpa Vin who Denise said, "would often come downstairs in a dress, dressed as Shirley Bassey" to more macho Northern men whom she said were less likely to show emotion. While Denise stressed that she definitely made mistakes in their upbringing, she is proud to have raised "two sensitive boys not only to family issues but to world issues". The rest of the panel agreed that different personality types will display emotion differently, but that it is certainly a positive step that men are better able to openly voice their feelings nowadays, should they wish to. Andrea McLean notably said, "I raise them as people. I don't raise them as a girl or a boy and I raise them in terms of how their personality responds." The panel then touched on something very interesting - what kind of a role women actually want men to play. They all agreed that it can be quite conflicting because women want to be independent but then can often appreciate chivalry and the feeling of being protected. Denise raised an insightful point saying:
"We're all very proud feminists at this table... but the boundries that [women] set out are quite difficult for [men]. Should they open a door? Shouldn't they open a door? Should they stand up? I still quite like chivalry."They all concurred, "it is confusing for men". Do you agree?
