A nurse has been re-arrested on suspicion of murdering eight babies at a UK hospital.

Lucy Letby was arrested for the first time last year on suspicion of the murder of eight infants and the attempted murder of six others at the Countess of Chester Hospital.

She was released on bail ahead of further inquiries but has since been re-arrested following three more charges against her.

Sky News reports that Letby, who worked at the hospital’s neo-natal unit for five years, is currently in custody.

Cheshire police detective inspector Paul Hughes said that the 28-year-old is helping police with their inquiries.

“As part of our ongoing investigation we have today (Monday 10 June) re-arrested the healthcare professional on suspicion of murder in relation to the deaths of eight babies and the attempted murder of six babies,” he said.

“She has also been arrested in connection with the attempted murder of three additional babies.

“I would like to reassure people that we are doing everything we can as quickly as we can to identify what has led to these baby deaths and collapses.”

The investigation into 17 babies’ deaths and 16 non-fatal collapses at the hospital between March 2015 and July 2016 began last year.

Letby had been transferred to an administrative role before this time.
