It’s the heartbreaking mystery that’s flummoxed police in Australia: two weeks ago, the skeletal remains of a small child were discovered near a suitcase in Wynarka in the South Australian bush.

Now Met Police in the UK have contacted police in Australia to investigate the possibility that the unidentified remains, thought to be those of a fair-haired little girl aged between two-and-a-half and four, could be those of missing British toddler Madeleine McCann.

While it is unlikely that the remains are that of the world’s most high profile missing child, Scotland Yard have said they ‘cannot rule it out’. Madeleine vanished from her families holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal eight years ago.

Australian police have released photographs of a number of items recovered with the body on July 14, including a purple Dora the Explorer t-shirt, a fake fur-trimmed coat, red shorts, teddy bear-printed boxer shorts and a handmade quilt.

‘Someone loved that little girl and either made made her, or gave her, that quilt. I would appeal for whoever loved her to get in touch with us,’ said Detective Superintendent Des Bray.

Detective Bray, from SAPOL Major Crime Investigation Section, believes”the child died a violent death in terrible circumstances”.

He speaks about the continuing murder investigation in this video from the discovery site.
