“Cancer is a fucking horror show”

Maia Dunphy has revealed her mother has sadly passed away.

The broadcaster’s mum died from cancer, she confirmed.

Alongside a series of touching photos from her mother’s life, Maia wrote about the incredible woman she was.

“I can’t believe I’m typing these words, but my darling Mum Helen passed away today.

“Cancer is a fucking horror show, and I never trot out platitudes about “fighting battles” because it seemingly implies some people don’t fight hard enough.

Dunphy said her mum bore her recent illness “with the same stoicism she approached everything in life”.

“Those of you who know her well will know how much has happened in these last difficult weeks.”

The mum said Helen showed concern for the people she loved until she took her final breath.

“I have been with her every day, and Helen didn’t doubt for a second how much she was loved.

Maia revealed her parents celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary this coming Friday.

“We will be marking it as if she were here (but without her giving out to us for spending too much on gifts…).

“She was a remarkable woman; without pretension and with a very rare self-assuredness that was a testament to all the right choices she made in her life and the acceptance of things she had no choice over.”

Maia said her mother was dedicated, devoted, and adored her grandson Tom.

She praised her mother for being a second mum to her son Tom.

“I simply could not have coped without her help. I’m lost without her already.”

We’re keeping Maia and her family in our thoughts at this time. There is no pain quite like the heartache of losing your mam.
