He is in the custody of the Greater Manchester Police.
Further allegations have been made against footballer Mason Greenwood. Police confirmed the 20-year-old is now being held on suspicion of sexual assault, as well as threats to kill.
He is also facing rape and assault charges.
Police arrested the 20-year-old footballer on Sunday, January 30th.
He has been in police custody since Sunday afternoon.
Police shared, “We became aware of online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence.”
Over the weekend, a woman accused Greenwood of rape and sexual assault. She posted photos, videos, and a voice note of the alleged abuse on social media.
However, she has since deleted them.
The victim is currently receiving specialist support as the investigation continues.
Police have asked the public to be careful about what they post online.
They have advised the public to avoid any commentary online. They’ve also asked them not to share images. This could compromise the victim’s right to “lifelong anonymity”.
It could also “risk prejudicing a live investigation with active proceedings.”
Manchester United stated, “Mason Greenwood will not train with, or play for, the club until further notice.”
“Manchester United reiterates its strong condemnation of violence of any kind.
The club opted against providing legal counsel for the 20-year-old. Greenwood has arranged his own personal representation as the investigation continues.
Both Nike and FIFA 22 have cut ties with the footballer since allegations surfaced over the weekend.
Nike said, “We are deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations.
“We will continue to monitor the situation closely.”
Greenwood made his debut for Manchester United in 2019. He has since amassed 129 appearances for the club.
