They have urged “extremely caution.”

Met Éireann have issued a status red wind warning for Co. Kerry ahead of Storm Atiyah.

West to southwest winds are expected to reach mean speeds higher than 80km/h later today, with gusts in excess of 130km/h as the evening approaches.

“Extreme caution is advised, especially near the coast and on high ground,” said Met Éireann this morning.

There is also a possibility of coastal flooding in Kerry due to high seas and storm surges.

A status orange wind warning has already been issued for Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo, Clare, Cork, and Limerick, with a status yellow warning issued for the rest of the country.

A status yellow rainfall warning has also been issued for Donegal.

As the storm travels down from Iceland today it’s set to bring strong west to southwest winds that will only increase to gale force winds in the western areas this afternoon.

Severe and damaging gusts are expected to developed as the day continues on, especially in the southwest. There is also potential for coastal flooding, particularly in the west.

Blustery showers are likely across the country, with the odd bit of hail and thunder.

But it’s the east of the country that will get the worst of the wind once the nighttime comes, as the storm travels across the country, eventually abating by the time Monday morning comes.

Temperatures will reach highs of 8 degrees.
