Met Éireann warns of “extremely cold” weekend as temperatures drop to -7

Welcome to January.

Met Éireann has warned of an “extremely cold” weekend ahead as temperatures are expected to drop to -7 in some parts of the country.

Today (Friday) will see widespread frost and ice across the country. Overall it will be a dry day with bright winter sunshine, “however well scattered wintry showers will occur too, with Ulster and east Leinster most at risk.”

Temperatures will only reach as high as 5 degrees in some parts of the country, with lows of 1 in others throughout the daytime. As the night looms, however, there will be severe frost setting in.

According to Met Éireann, it will be “extremely cold tonight with widespread frost and ice” with temperatures reaching lows of between of -1 to -7 degrees in Leinster and Munster. It will be dry and clear in many areas, but some icy showers will affect the east of Leinster.

And as if that wasn’t enough, mist with some freezing fog will also develop during calmer times through the night.

Leading into Saturday it will be (you guessed it) very cold with freezing fog, wintry showers affecting the east of Leinster, and patchy rain and drizzle gradually moving to the west and northwest. Highest temperatures will be between 1 to 4 degrees.

Good thing we’re in lockdown, wha?
