Mum Gives Birth to Surprise Quintuplets

Katie Mythen-Lynch

When twenty-five-year-old Manita Singh was admitted to hospital with labour pains at 26 weeks, she and her husband Mahesh worried their baby was about to arrive early.

What they didn’t know (Manita had never had an ultrasound) was that they were about to become parents to five baby girls.

Doctors at the Chhattisgarh hospital in eastern India broke the news before delivering the quintuplets, each one weighing little more than 3lb, within 30 minutes on Saturday morning.

All five girls are currently being cared for in the neo-natal Intensive Care Unit.

The Singhs, who tragically lost a baby born prematurely in 2014, are overjoyed, but the family face a long road as their brood battle to overcome their health issues.

Dr Tekam, who led a team of medics in the delivery, said:

‘This is the first case in my career where I have delivered five babies through normal birth.

‘We are very happy for the parents but the babies are under supervision as they all are premature.

‘While they are healthy, we cannot say if they will survive.

‘However, we are doing every bit to save them.’

We hope to see all five sisters thriving in the coming weeks.
