Mum says she could face jail if she doesn’t get 9-year-old son vaccinated

A mum has said she's been told she will facing jail time if she doesn't get her nine-year-old son vaccinated.

Mum-of-two Rebecca Bredow believes she has the right to chose whether or not to immunise her child based on her "knowledge of vaccines". But now a Detroit judge has now given the mum a week to get her son vaccinated or she will be thrown in jail, according to local news station WXYZ Studios. She told the news station:

"I would rather sit behind bars standing up for what I believe in, than giving in to something I strongly don't believe in. “God forbid he were to be injured by one of the vaccines. Then what? That scares me. “I believe in the choice of the parent to make the right decision based on their knowledge of vaccines.”

Rebecca said she made her decision after reading books and research on the topic, and then applied for a waiver that the state of Michigan allows for “religious convictions or other objections to immunisation" The mum-of-two and her ex-husband later became locked in a legal dispute over their son's medical rights, leaving Rebecca feeling "backed into a corner." She claimed the the pair had originally come to a compromise that their son would not get all of his vaccines during a short period of time, which she says was suggested by doctors. She added:

"I feel angry. I feel backed into a corner. “I feel like my rights as a parent have been taken away.” "Why automatically side with the father that wants the vaccines? What about my choice as a mother?"

According to Michigan.gov, schools in the state require students get vaccinations before starting kindergarten up until the 7th grade. The vaccines include protection against Diphtheria, tetanus, mumps, Pertussis, Polio, meningococcal conjugate, measles, Rubella, Hepatitis B and chicken pox. Featured image via wxyz.com.
