Nearly 250,000 premises without electricity this morning

It follows the force of Ophelia.

Laura Holland

As the country wakes following ex-hurricane Ophelia, some people’s homes and businesses are still without electricity.

Yesterday evening, ESB confirmed that 360,000 homes and businesses suffered power loss. They worked throughout the day to restore some of that power but the majority were left without electricity overnight.

This morning, it’s estimated that nearly 250,000 of those customers are still without power, and it could take up to ten days to rectify the situation.

This map indications the areas where power was lost.

An update is expected to be given this morning.

In the meantime, ESB Networks advises customers to do the following if they are without power, before calling them:

  • Check if your neighbours are without power, or if your street lighting is not working. If either of these is the case, call 1850 372 999.
  • Check if your trip switch is in the ‘on’ position or if your fuses have blown. If your trip switch has operated or a fuse has blown, turn off all your appliances before resetting the switch or replacing the fuse.
  • Sometimes the ESB Networks’ Main Fuse in your home or building may have blown. Call 1850 372 999 to report the problem.
