5 people hospitalised after recent Kinder Salmonella outbreak

The FSAI issued an urgent recall last week.

5 people have been hospitalised with Salmonella poisoning after Kinder products were contaminated. The Food Safety Authority of Ireland identified an outbreak last week. Most of the cases are in children under the age of 10. Overall, 15 people suffered from Salmonella poisoning, but five of those ended up needing hospital care. Speaking about the outbreak, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control said: "The outbreak is characterised by an unusually high proportion of children being hospitalised." "Some with severe clinical symptoms such as bloody diarrhoea." The affected products include the 20g Kinder Surprise. Kinder Mini Eggs (75g), Kinder Surprise (100g), Kinder Schokobons (200g) and Kinder Egg Hunt Kit (150g). All products have been on sale since June 2021. The bacterium Salmonella infects the gastrointestinal tract, which causes people to develop gastroenteritis. The majority of people infected will suffer from diarrhoea. Many will also suffer from a headache, stomach cramps and fever. Bloody diarrhoea is not uncommon if infected. People often develop symptoms within 6-72 hours of becoming infected. Most people will recover at home without treatment, but some may require hospital care. The majority of cases resolve after 4-7 days without treatment. You can treat it with rest and fluids. It is important to stay hydrated when fighting the illness. The FSAI warned, "Diarrhoea can occasionally be severe enough to require hospital admission. The elderly, infants and those with impaired immune systems are more likely to have a more severe illness." You should not eat the implicated products.
