He failed a roadside breath test over the weekend.
An off-duty Garda has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant.
The Garda, who wasn't working at the time, was arrested in Tipperary but is based in the south.

The Irish Mirror, the man has been charged and will appear in court in the coming weeks.
It is understood that he was four times over the legal limit, which is currently 22 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 milliliters of breath.
The Garda is now fighting for his job after the incident.
He was stopped by Gardaí early on Sunday morning. The man was then asked to do a roadside breath test which he failed.
If convicted, he will be fined up to €400. He could also be banned from driving for six months.
As well as the fine and driving ban, he also faces losing his job.
A source told The Irish Mirror that it will be difficult for him to remain on the force if he is convicted.
"He is in real trouble. He will be fighting to keep his job once the court is concluded."
The source added, "It is a very serious matter. It will be hard for him to stay in the job after this."
A Garda spokesperson confirmed to
Joe.ie that the Garda is stationed in the south of the country.
"He was subsequently charged to a future sitting of Clonmel District Court."
