“Truly our hero.”

A nanny in New York City is in critical condition after being hit by a truck whilst saving the child in her care.

Arcellie “Celi” Muschamp, 52, was crossing the road in Park Slope, Brooklyn on Monday morning when she was struck by a 2011 Dodge Ram pickup truck making a left turn.

She had been pushing the buggy of the one-year-old she cares for at the time.

The child’s parents wrote on a GoFundMe page that Muschamp successfully got the buggy out of harm’s way, but was unable to get herself out of the vehicle’s path in time.

“Our son Rowan was amazingly unscathed in the incident and based on eyewitness accounts Celi helped save him from almost-certain serious injury or death by pushing his stroller out of harm’s way as the vehicle approached,” they said.

“The doctors have called it a miracle and Celi is truly our hero.”

Following the incident, the nanny was brought to hospital and is currently in critical condition, People reports.

Her daughter Razhel told the New York Daily News that Muschamp underwent brain surgery and was recovering in intensive care.

On top of being a “wonderful, loving nanny”, Rowan’s parents added Muschamp is also “a loving wife, mother, and sibling who has been a resident of the Park Slope neighbourhood in Brooklyn for many years”.

Originally from Belize, the 52-year-old has been a nanny in New York City for over two decades. She had been working for Rowan’s family for a year.

The driver of the truck that hit her has not been identified by name, but authorities say he was a 68-year-old man who remained on the scene after the incident.

No charges have been filed at this time.
