One of Ireland’s most famous primary schools is making some big changes

One of Dublin's most famous schools is set to transform itself into a Gaelscoil from next September.

Synge Street CBS, one of the country's most celebrated Christian Brothers Schools and situated in Dublin 8, is going as Gaeilge from September. The famous boys' school's board of management has announced that they will also be opening their doors to girls for the first time as the school moves to a co-ed policy.

"Future classes enrolled will be taught through the medium of the Irish language. Children will be taught through the immersion model of education whereby all teaching and learning is through Gaeilge."

'Synger' as the school is affectionately known, was founded in 1864 and boasts many well-known past pupils including Gay Byrne and Eddie Jordan. The movie Sing Street, based on the real-life school and starring Maria Doyle Kennedy and Jack Reynor, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last year. The critically acclaimed film grossed $13 million worldwide, and was nominated for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes.
