Our parents have no idea what we do at work

Katie Mythen-Lynch

More than three quarters of Irish professionals admit their parents have no idea what they do all day at work.

New research from LinkedIn has revealed a rather large knowledge gap when it comes to Mum and Dad’s understanding of their children’s careers, with only 24 per cent of Irish professionals saying they believe their parents understand what they do for a living.

When it came to specific jobs, the research revealed that UI Designer (89 per cent), Data Scientist (78 per cent) and Sub Editor (68 per cent) were the jobs parents were most confused about. Other roles that parents were in the dark about were Social Media Manager (68per cent), Radio Producer (63per cent) and Actuary (63 per cent).

These findings were unveiled to mark the third annual LinkedIn Bring In Your Parents Day, a worldwide event in which workers around the globe invite their parents into the workplace to give them an inside view of their working life.
