Kensington Palace has released three heartwarming family photographs to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s 90th birthday today, and once again the younger royals steal the show.

The new photos, taken by American photographer Annie Leibovitz in the Green Drawing Room at Windsor Castle, depict the nonagenarian, known in the family as ‘Gan Gan’, as a doting grandmother, posing with (from bottom left) Mia Tindall (holding the Queen’s handbag), Viscount Severn and Lady Louise, Savannah and Isla Phillips, Prince George and, in the Queen’s arms, 11-month-old Princess Charlotte.

A second photo depicts the Queen posing casually with her daughter Princess Anne in the White Drawing Room.

The final photo in the trio, an atmospheric outdoors shot, shows the monarch, hands in pockets, on the steps of the east terrace surrounded by her beloved corgis Willow, Vulcan, Holly and Candy.

EDITORS NOTE - EMBARGOED, RELEASABLE ON

Earlier this week the royal family released special card of commemorative stamps to mark the milestone birthday.

Prince George stole the limelight once again (on his first ever stamp!), beaming at the camera flanked by his great grandmother the Queen, his father Prince William and his grandfather Prince Charles.

The celebrations have been a real treat for royal watchers, who were also treated to this adorable footage of Prince Charles and a child in the BBC One documentary Elizabeth at 90 – A Family Tribute to be broadcast tonight at 9pm.
